Not a day goes by that there isn’t more news coverage on the growing cost-of-living crisis, particularly utility bills.
Thanks to a £20,000 grant from UK Power Networks, our Life Connectors have been able to provide advice and support to people struggling with rising energy bills.
There are lots of reasons why households struggle with their bills – everything from low incomes to higher than average energy needs due to age, health reasons or family circumstances. Over the last few months, we have been giving top tips about how to save money as well as signposting clients to specialist support and grants. A list of simple hints to deal with the cost-of-living crisis can be found below:
- Switch off lights in unoccupied rooms
- Hang thicker curtains and close the curtains at dusk
- Monitor your energy use
- Turn the thermostat down by 1 degree
- Use night storage heater controls correctly
- Get a better understanding of the Economy 7 tariff
- Reduce on-peak electric immersion heater by 1 hour per day
- Power down gadgets and/or turn off appliances
- Dry clothes outside instead of in a tumble dryer
- Use gas central heating instead of a decorative gas fire
- Get the most from solar PV panels
- Defrost the freezer regularly
- Only boil the water that you need
- Wash at 30 degrees rather than at higher temperatures
- Fully load the dishwasher and/or washing machine before using
- Set a timer for 4 minutes when using an electric shower
