Making connections under the streets of Norwich

Almost 30 people had a free guided tour of a secret part of Norwich as part of a series of events funded by Better Together to mark Loneliness Awareness Week (June 17-21).

The tour took in the historic basement, undercroft and passageways lying beneath KindaKafe on Castle Meadow, with tour guide Lisa Willets entertaining the group with stories of weavers’ windows, early X-Ray machines and 19th century public hangings.

Among the people attending the tour was Joan, who comes to KindaKafe’s Friday Friendship Group. ‘I began to feel lonely and isolated when I had to stop work to care for my brother’ she explains. ‘I started coming to these groups and have found them very welcoming; it is good to chat with people who are in similar circumstances and feeling the same way.’

Also joining the tour was Natasha who, like Joan, attends the Friendship Group and who said ‘We all have a need to be with people and connect with people. Everyone in the group is kind, friendly, courteous and supportive.’
