Donna’s journey from isolation to independence

Donna is a survivor, who has experienced the unimaginable. She had been violated and her trust in men shattered.
Donna’s Story

Earlier this year she was referred to the Better Together Norfolk team by the Community Mental Health team. At the time, Donna rarely left the house, fearing the judgement of others. She was drinking heavily and having falls which resulted in bone breakages and a back injury.

Donna’s mother had passed away last year contributing to her declining mental health and attempted suicide. Her support circle was limited and confidence low.

Although Donna was initially apprehensive about meeting with a male Life Connector, she reluctantly agreed. The support began with gentle walks to begin building trust and confidence around people.

Within a few weeks, they would progress to visiting a café, then a community hub. Since then, Donna has been supported by her Life Connector to try several other groups and activities. Some have been great, others not.

This has paved the way for Donna to find the confidence to leave her home and explore new interests. She has enjoyed taking part in an Aquafit Class, has reacquainted with an old friend in attending a craft group and now regularly uses public transport to get out and about.

When we initially met Donna, she hung her head low, but acknowledged she wanted to “live again.”  Donna has come so far in her progress, she no longer needs the support of our Life Connector.
