Cooking on a Budget Workshops Update

Better Together piloted their first ‘Cooking on a Budget Workshop’ in June in South Norfolk. With the current cost of living challenges we are all experiencing, the pilot proved to be very timely.

This free community workshop provided the opportunity for participants to learn cooking processes required to make economical, healthy meals from readily available ingredients, and how to reduce food waste.

Caroline, our tutor, is a qualified food and nutrition specialist who volunteers for Norfolk County Council’s Joy of Food project. She has many years’ experience in the world of food and was able to answer the many questions that popped up during the sessions. In teaching recipes, Caroline places emphasis on the processes involved, to enable learners to adapt to their own experience and needs.

People of different ages and abilities enjoyed making nutritious food together, such as her homemade “pot noodle” and scones. By encouraging social interaction, the workshops enabled learners to share their own tips and experiences of how they managed dietary needs or their own budgets.

At the end of each session some stayed to socialise and enjoy their food together, while others took the food with them to enjoy at home.

With the success of our pilot workshop we plan to run further cooking on a budget workshops later this month (July) and September.
