Slow Cooker Demonstration

We started our slow cooker course with a demonstration at the Harleston Food Festival on Friday 16th of September.

It was pouring with rain that day, but this was perfect weather to learn how to make a tomato and bean casserole, with ingredients sourced from supermarket budget ranges, making the dish very economical and nutritious. Caroline, our tutor gave an insight into the best way to use the slow cooker and how to conserve energy whilst cooking with it.

The demonstration was attended by 32 people who enjoyed a sample of the bean casserole that Caroline brought along to the demonstration for everyone to try.

Some participants had never used a slow cooker before and lacked the confidence to try. People were able to sign up for the first of the follow-up workshops being held at St. Johns Church in Harleston. We hope to make this a regular course over the winter months to help people to manage fuel economy but still eat well on a low budget.

Better Together have also successfully run a wider fundraising campaign to buy slow cookers to distribute to our clients who need them the most, especially those struggling with rising energy bills. We know that having a slow cooker can be the difference between someone with a busy schedule getting a healthy, affordable and warm meal or having to grab a sandwich or a less healthy ready meal or more expensive takeaway.
